Update from the Capitol: The Start of Committee Meetings

By: Sen. Larry Walker (R – Perry)

Last week, we began the monumental task of working to pass an amended FY ‘21 budget and a balanced budget for the 2022 fiscal term; a task that while routinely requires careful and meticulous deliberation, has taken on even more significance in the wake of COVID-19. The painstaking work we have ahead of ourselves, in terms of subcommittee meetings and prioritizing resources, will undoubtedly offer its challenges but we are eager to fulfil our constitutional duty in an as expeditious yet thoughtful approach as possible, in order to get it done before a possible a COVID-19 outbreak here at the Capitol shuts us down. During the first week of the legislative session, my colleagues and I took an oath to represent the people of this great state and to advocate for the needs of our constituents, in all that we do, and funding state government in a fiscally responsible manner is a duty that we take very seriously. I feel blessed to be able to serve as a voice for District 20 and to demonstrate my commitment to that responsibility in the days and weeks before us.

Capitol Recap: Budget Week – A Look at Georgia’s Economy

By: Sen. Larry Walker (R – Perry)

Georgia is stronger than it has been and while we must continue to weather the storms, I am confident in the future of our great state.

Capitol Recap: A Welcome Back to the Gold Dome

By: Sen. Larry Walker (R – Perry)

With a full legislature back under the Gold Dome, the start of the first session of the 156th Georgia General Assembly has, in many ways, served as a balance between the old versus the new. The 2021 Legislative Session has marked the start of a new biennium and following the results of our local elections on November 3rd, that means we’ve welcomed a new cohort of senators who bring expertise in a variety of sectors, from farming to public health, and anywhere in between. With that, many of us have tried to continue the policy-focused dialogues we left off on in June, working to find the best ways we can support the businesses and families of this great state. I would like to thank you for your trust in me. I promise to serve you faithfully and to fight for your greatest needs in all that I do.

Capitol Recap: Looking Ahead to 2021

With 2020 quickly coming to an end, the return to the general routines of the legislative session is as close as ever, reminding us of the refreshed start to daily convenings under the Gold Dome, new legislative initiatives and the typical busyness of committee meetings. Our work, of course, has not stopped during our time away from the Capitol and as we reflect on the close of a rather unprecedented, challenging yet fully accomplished year, our service to you remains as critical as ever. With that, while we may say goodbye to some of our old friends and colleagues, we also welcome a new cohort of bright-minded, passionate members who share in our commitment to reflect your best interests in all that we do. In anticipation of this upcoming legislative session, I would like to highlight an overview of our many major successes this year and what priorities we hope to address in 2021.
