Sen. Jones to Host Families and Communities Summit during Atlanta Global Peace Celebration

ATLANTA (November 23, 2010) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) will host the Strengthening Families and Communities Summit on Thursday, Dec. 9 during the Global Peace Celebration Atlanta 2010 to address the significant social challenges facing families and the community of Atlanta.  Jones has launched the Strengthening Families and Communities Coalition (SFCC), a collaboration between federal, state and city agencies as well as private partners and faith and academic institutions to look at four critical areas in the community, including economic development and financial literacy, teen pregnancy, school dropouts and youth violence.

Sen. Jones will Travel to Kenya for Global Peace Convention

ATLANTA (November 16, 2010) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) will travel to Nairobi, Kenya this week for the 2010 Global Peace Convention, a world-level platform where leaders gather to share ideas on how to build lasting world peace.  He will join social entrepreneurs, interfaith leaders, and prominent government, civic and academic representatives at the Kenyatta International Conference Center from Wednesday, Nov. 17 through Saturday, Nov. 20 to celebrate the Global Peace Festival Foundation’s (GPFF) annual convention.

Now is the Time to Reorganize the DeKalb County School Board

ATLANTA (October 14, 2010) – How long can we ask students to tolerate an inadequate education system?  I’ve attended several public debates on DeKalb’s Board of Education and have raised questions about changing the size of the board and instituting an independent ethics commission.  After listening intently to the response of incumbent members and candidates, I believe we cannot wait and that now is the time to reorganize the board.

CANCELLED: SACS President to Address DeKalb County Legislators on School Board Governance

ATLANTA (October 5, 2010) – DeKalb County lawmakers will hear from Dr. Mark Elgart, president and CEO of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), during their meeting on Thursday, Oct. 21 at the State Capitol, co-chaired by Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur).  The discussion will focus on school board governance issues in the State of Georgia, and the public is encouraged to attend.

Sen. Jones to Host Henry County Town Hall Meeting

ATLANTA (October 5, 2010) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) will host a town hall meeting in conjunction with the Henry County NAACP on Saturday, Oct. 23 at Fairview Elementary School.  Candidates running for local office in Henry County will attend, including candidates for the local school board, county commission and legislature.  The meeting will include a panel discussion and a question and answer session.  The public is invited to attend.
