GUEST EDITORIAL: Anavitarte: Back to School and Back to What Matters

This month, across Georgia, parents are packing lunches and taking the obligatory first-day photo. Some are walking their nervous kindergartner into a classroom for the first time. Others are handing the car keys to their teenager and wondering how the years went by so quickly. Thousands more are loading up cars and sending their son or daughter off to college, perhaps as the first person in their family to ever take that step. I’m especially proud to say I’ve joined those ranks, having just waved goodbye to my own daughter as she starts her college journey in Athens this fall.

The good news is that the problems have been identified, agencies and the company are responding, and we have an opportunity to get this right.

Tillery: The Case for Ending Georgia’s Income Tax

Georgia families need relief.

Gas prices don’t wait on legislation. Neither do groceries, power bills or child care. Families feel those costs every week, and they’ve been clear about what they want from their elected officials: fewer excuses and more money left in their paychecks.

That’s why the Georgia Senate created the Special Committee on Eliminating Georgia’s Income Tax, which I had the privilege of chairing. Our committee’s job was not to debate whether income tax elimination is a good idea. That debate is largely moot at this point. Our charge was to figure out how to do it responsibly.
