ATLANTA (April 29, 2009) – Governor Sonny Perdue today signed into law Sen. John Wiles’ (R-Kennesaw) legislation (SB 151) giving family members of crime victims greater options in how they present their testimony before a jury. Under current law, family members are only allowed to deliver a victim impact statement by reading a written testimonial.

ATLANTA (April 23, 2009) – Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) today received the Latin American Association’s (LAA) award for Outstanding Public Service and Leadership at the organization’s 20th annual Compañeros Awards Luncheon, held at the Georgia Aquarium. Every year, LAA recognizes exceptional community leaders and this year chose to honor those who have made a difference in the lives of Georgia’s Hispanic children, teens and families.

ATLANTA (April 17, 2009) – State Sen. Judson Hill (R-Marietta) has been re-appointed Chairman of the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) and Georgia Dome Authority Overview Committee this week by the Senate Committee of Assignments. The committee Hill will oversee is charged with reviewing the success with which the GWCC Authority is accomplishing its duties. Hill has overseen the GWCC Authority for the past four years as its chairman, working closely with the elected members of the GWCC Board. ATLANTA (April 17, 2009) – Thousands of discontented Georgians lined the streets around our state Capitol this week to protest excessive Washington spending and an increasingly burdensome tax code. In response to a federal government that thinks it knows how to spend your money better than you do, and continues to grow nearly unchecked, the Georgia Senate voted to reaffirm our rights as a sovereign state to prevent the federal government from continuing to expand.

ATLANTA (April 17, 2009) – Sen. Jim Butterworth (R-Demorest) provided a guarantee that local governments in the 50th Senate District will continue to receive their share of unidentifiable sales tax proceeds with the passage of House Bill 181, which he helped to move through the Senate. This legislation reinstates the sunset date on the authority of the Department of Revenue (DOR) to return these funds to local governments, which was set to expire on June 30 and will become law upon the Governor’s signature.
