Notes from the Georgia Senate

As my colleagues and I near the completion of our two week recess, I would like to take an opportunity to update you on what has been going on here at the State Capitol.  By now, I am sure you are aware of the dire situation our state budget is facing.  As we continue to experience the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, our revenues have declined month after month.  We have used this necessary break from the normal legislative process so that we can dedicate a sufficient amount of time to examining every avenue state funds are appropriated to. Sen. Orrock Announces First Women Entrepreneurs Day

ATLANTA (March 4, 2010) – Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) will announce the State Capitol’s first Women Entrepreneurs Day on Monday, March 8 to recognize Georgia’s nearly 200,000 women business owners.  In addition to a delegation of women entrepreneurs, Sen. Orrock will be joined by Felicia Joy, founder of Ms. CEO Media Inc., a fast-growing multimedia company in Atlanta that provides insight and inspiration for women entrepreneurs.

Sen. Buckner Announces Education Town Hall Meeting

ATLANTA (March 3, 2010) – Sen. Gail Buckner (D-Jonesboro) will hold a town hall meeting on Saturday, March 20 to present information about education issues.  The program will begin at 10:00 a.m. with recognition of Henry County’s Teachers of the Year as well as other outstanding Henry County School employees who will be presented with HERO awards (Henry Employee Recognition Observance).  There will also be a presentation on Race to the Top, the national education initiative that the Henry County School System has signed.

Sen. Buckner Announces Press Conference on Cancer Donation Check-off

ATLANTA (March 2, 2010) – Sen. Gail Buckner (D-Jonesboro) is announcing a press conference where senators and representatives will join William Todd, executive director of the Georgia Cancer Coalition, to discuss the voluntary check-off on Georgia’s State income tax form to donate to the research and prevention of cancer in Georgia.  Legislation authored by Sen. Buckner was originally dedicated to breast cancer, prostate cancer and ovarian cancer.  During the 2009 Session, a bill was passed to open the donations up to cover all forms of cancer.  Since the creation of the Georgia cancer check-off on income tax forms, more than $2.75 million has been donated.

The Senate Goes Red for Republican Women

ATLANTA – (Mar. 2, 2010) State Sen. Mitch Seabaugh (R-Sharpsburg) last week welcomed the Georgia Federation of Republican Women to the State Capitol for “Red Coat Day.” The women wore red coats in support of their organization, which has been instrumental in advocating on behalf of conservative ideals for the citizens of Georgia.

 “The Georgia Federation of Republican Women dedicate themselves to protecting the concerns and issues that I continue to fight for in the Georgia Senate,” said Sen. Seabaugh. “It was an honor to host them at the Capitol and to share what we’re working on here in Georgia.”

 The Georgia Federation of Republican began as a grassroots organization with the goal of educating voters and increasing their participation in state and local elections. Beginning in 1957, the group affiliated with the national association to support conservative platforms in the state of Georgia. Today they support a platform which fights against measures that damage the economy, increase the national debt, give the federal government unprecedented power and make our nation vulnerable to our enemies.
