ATLANTA (May 16, 2014) | State Senator Nan Grogan Orrock (D-Atlanta) joined Rep. Sheila Jones (D-Atlanta), Rep. Keisha Waites (D-Atlanta), and Rep. Simone Bell (D-Atlanta) in a meeting with Congressman David Scott (D-GA13) to present him with a letter signed by twenty-two Georgia women legislators. In the letter the delegation asked Congressman Scott to lend his support to sensible reductions in wasteful Pentagon spending and an increase in Pentagon accountability.
“We appreciate Congressman Scott’s demonstrated commitment to adequately funding the needs of our shared constituents, especially veterans,” said Sen. Orrock. “Georgia taxpayers want the best use made of their tax dollars, and we agree that caring for the needs of our citizens, our veterans, and our communities paves the road toward a brighter future.”
This letter to Congress regarding the federal budget is a national initiative of the Women Legislators’ Lobby (WiLL) and has amassed nearly three hundred state legislators’ signatures from across the nation. By signing this letter, hundreds of women state legislators are urging Congress to make responsible cuts to the Pentagon budget and redirect those dollars away from unneeded weapons towards other vital public programs and projects with the goal of securing the nation’s economic future. WiLL is a program of Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women to act politically to reduce violence and militarism, and redirect excessive military resources toward unmet human and environmental needs.
