ATLANTA (September 19, 2013) – Sen. Bill Jackson (R-Appling) attended a joint meeting between Georgia and South Carolina lawmakers and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Sept. 18, 2013, at Lake Hartwell to discuss adaptive water management and sign the Savannah River Basin Comprehensive Study.
“Responsible water management of the Savannah River Basin is essential to the State of Georgia and South Carolina,” said Sen. Jackson. “This basin fuels drinking, recreation, agricultural and commercial needs for both states from its headwaters in Blue Ridge Mountains to the Port of Savannah, which makes it important that our states work collaboratively on adaptive oversight of this vital water resource.”
During the summit, Governors Nathan Deal and Nikki Haley expressed their joint wish for cooperation of Lake Hartwell, Savannah River and the Savannah River Basin water management. Colonel Thomas Tickner, Command of Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, signed the Savannah River Basin comprehensive Study authorizing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to study the basin for flood damage and drought preparedness, water supply and other related water issues.
