Sen. Rick Jeffares Recognized for his Support of the Georgia Archives

ATLANTA (August 28, 2013) –Sen. Rick Jeffares (R – Locust Grove) was recently recognized by Friends of Georgia Archives and History for his efforts in the General Assembly to ensure a smooth transition for the Georgia Archives to the University System of Georgia. Sen. Jeffares received a plaque on July 29, 2013 for his commitment to making sure the Georgia Archives will remain open to the public and receive proper funding.

“The Georgia Archives are important to preserving Georgia’s unique history and cultural heritage,” said Sen. Jeffares. “Keeping the archives accessible is something that I hope future Georgians will be able to enjoy for generations to come.”

Over the past several years, budget cuts at the Georgia Secretary of State has resulted in diminished public access to the Georgia Archives and a reduction in services – cutting total days of operation down to two and reducing staff to four full-time positions with only a few part-time employees.

During the recent session, Governor Nathan Deal and the Georgia General Assembly acted swiftly to ensure the future of the Georgia Archives. As a result, funding has been increased for the Georgia Archives to remain open to the public four days a week and hire additional staff. Effective July 1, 2013, the Georgia Archives were transferred to the Board of Regents under the University System of Georgia.

Friends of the Georgia Archives and History is a not-for-profit organization that works to support the Georgia Archives and pursue fundraising opportunities on behalf of the Archives.
