ATLANTA, GA (April 2, 2013) – Last week, Senator Donzella James (D- Atlanta) was joined at the State Capitol by Mayors Against Illegal Guns to take part in the National Day to Demand Action to end gun violence.
“I’m proud to stand with 12 Georgia mayors and millions of Americans who are committed to ending gun violence,” said Sen. James. “We must send a clear message to Congress that the time for action is now. Too many people have lost their lives to senseless acts of gun violence, with many of them being children. We cannot afford to wait any longer.”
Since its inception in April 2006, Mayors Against Illegal Guns has grown from 15 mayors to more than 900 mayors across the country. With over 1.4 million grassroots supporters, the organization is the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country. The National Day to Demand Action was highlighted by more than 100 events and petitions drives to call on Congress to support commonsense gun laws including comprehensive and enforceable background checks.
The bipartisan coalition, co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston City Mayor Thomas Menino, has united the nation’s mayors around common goals that seek to end illegal gun violence.
