Sen. Nikki Merritt Elected Chair of Georgia Legislative Black Caucus

ATLANTA (December 11, 2024) This week,Sen. Nikki Merritt (D–Grayson) was elected Chair of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC). The caucus, currently the largest legislative Black caucus in the United States with 75 members, “seeks to protect the general welfare of Black people, other people of color and disadvantaged citizens of Georgia in matters of health and welfare, education, social and criminal justice, employment and economic empowerment.”

“I am honored to be elected Chairwoman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus for the upcoming biennium,” said Sen. Merritt. “For over 50 years, this caucus has passionately and successfully advocated for Georgia’s Black and fellow minority populations. And this past summer, I worked tirelessly alongside many of my fellow caucus members to ensure that AP African American studies be recognized in the state’s education catalog. I look forward to continuing this progress by working alongside my esteemed colleagues on the board and in both chambers of the Georgia General Assembly. Together, we will continue championing key initiatives such as education, healthcare, economic development and housing for all Georgians.”
