ATLANTA (December 6, 2010) – Senate President Pro Tempore Tommie Williams (R-Lyons) has been named to State School Superintendent-Elect Dr. John Barge’s transition team.
“Georgia’s educators are one of the most important assets to the future of our children and state, and I’m confident that Dr. Barge will be a champion for our teachers. As a career educator, he has worked at all levels of the education system and truly knows the challenges our public schools face,” said Williams. “I look forward to working with Dr. Barge to build a stronger partnership between the legislature and the Department of Education. He understands how changes in policy at the state level affect schools locally, and together we can establish a cooperative approach to making Georgia’s education the best in the nation.”
Williams has been a leader in education policy, advocating for increased accountability and transparency in public education. As a member of the transition team, he will help set the vision for Georgia’s pubic schools as Barge prepares to become the state’s 21st school superintendent.
Sen. Tommie Williams serves as President Pro Tempore. He represents the 19th Senate District, which includes Appling, Jeff Davis, Long, Montgomery, Toombs, Wayne, and Wheeler counties and a portion of Liberty and Tattnall counties. He can be reached at 404.656.0089 or by email at tommie.williams@Senate.ga.gov.
