ATLANTA (Jan. 14, 2010) – Yesterday, State Senator Ronald B. Ramsey, Sr. (D–Lithonia) addressed a coalition of the blind and deaf community about funding regarding the 2007 legislation, SB 49. The bill, signed by the governor, transferred the deaf-blind community services from the Division of Rehabilitation Services to the Department of Labor to allow for better access to critical resources.
“It is very important to care for every member of society, particularly vulnerable citizens,” said Ramsey. “I will work diligently to make sure that we are not denying citizens the basic services they need and deserve.”
The Georgia Council of the Blind participated in “Blind Day at the Capitol.” First on the agenda was a meeting with Sen. Ramsey. They discussed the budget and the necessity for allocations for the blind-deaf community. A major topic for discussion was the possibility of forming a blind-deaf commission in order to streamline funding and resource allocations. Sen. Ramsey ensured the audience that he would work to see that every citizen has access to the resources they deserve.
The council met with legislators and participated in a bi-partisan forum with gubernatorial candidates. The group also witnessed a resolution in their honor in the House Chamber.
