ATLANTA (September 29, 2009) – State Senator Jim Butterworth (R-Clarkesville) recently announced talks with Georgia Power have successfully resulted in the lowering of four Georgia Power controlled lakes, creating jobs for citizens throughout the surrounding communities.
“I am pleased with the outcome of our work. Georgians now have access to jobs not possible with the lakes at full pool,” said Sen. Butterworth. “I am grateful to Georgia Power for giving the economy in these areas a much-needed boost.”
Georgia Power controls the level of these lakes as they are used for hydroelectric power throughout the year. In past years, however, the subsidiary of Southern Company has not lowered the lakes for fear of drought-like situations. Much needed repair and construction jobs will now be possible thanks to large amounts of rainfall Georgia has received this year.
Lake Rabun will be lowered 12 ft. starting Oct. 5 for approximately seven weeks. Lake Yonah will be lowered 12 ft. starting Oct. 12 for two weeks. Lake Seed will be lowered by 12 ft. starting Jan. 1, 2010. It will then be refilled by Feb. All indications are that Lake Burton will be drawn down as well. The schedule should be announced in coming weeks
Sen. Jim Butterworth represents the 50th Senate District which includes Towns, Rabun, Habersham, Stephens, Banks, Franklin, and Hart counties along with a portion of White County. He can be reached by phone at 404.463.5257 or by email at jim.butterworth@senate.ga.gov.
