Sen. Jones Announces GLBC Heritage Dinner

ATLANTA (Feb. 9, 2010) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur), chairman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC), is announcing the annual Heritage Dinner at the Georgia Freight Depot, one of the most successful and well-attended cultural events around the Georgia State Capitol during the legislative session.  Invitees include keynote speaker Dick Gregory, an activist, comedian and humanitarian, as well as Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond.  The event will also feature music by Kandi Burress, cast member of the Real Housewives of Atlanta.    This GLBC dinner celebrates African-American history by exhibiting paintings, music, and dance, as well as acknowledging community activists who diligently serve to improve and enhance communities of color in Georgia.  Proceeds raised will help support the GLBC’s Young Scholars Scholarship and Legislative Internship programs.

The People’s Business

The U.S. Constitution begins with arguably the most powerful words in the English language, “We the People” not “we the government.”  The government exists at the will of the people to work for the people.  During tough economic times, many forget this and suggest greater government controls and intervention to “help” the people.  Taxation, litigation and regulation have proven to only restrict and confine the economy; rather than encourage growth and expansion.  As elected officials, we have a duty and responsibility to work to expand opportunity and create an environment where Georgians can pursue the American Dream.

Sen. Butterworth Unveils Transparency in Government Act and Paper Reduction Act

ATLANTA (Feb. 8, 2010) – Today, Sen. Jim Butterworth (R-Clarkesville) unveiled legislation promoting further transparency and savings in government.  The Transparency in Government Act will enhance reporting requirements of the public information website, open.georgia.gov. The Paper Reduction Act will bring cost savings by reducing the unnecessary, wasteful use of paper and increase electronic distribution and publication practices.

Wiles Proposes Incentives to Local Governments Utilizing U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Programs

ATLANTA (Feb. 8, 2010) – State Sen. John Wiles (R-Kennesaw) today introduced legislation that would provide monetary incentives for local governments to utilize U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Section 287(g) and Secured Communities programs so that criminal illegal aliens are identified and turned over to the proper authorities.
