Staton Elected Senate Republican Caucus Vice-Chairman

ATLANTA (April 29, 2010) – The Senate Republican Caucus announced Thursday the election of State Sen. Cecil Staton (R-Macon) as its caucus vice-chairman.  As vice-chair, Staton will be heavily involved in shaping the current majority party’s agenda and strategies going forward entering a critical 2010 election cycle into the 2011 General Assembly

“I am truly honored by the confidence my Senate Republican colleagues have bestowed on me as its new vice-chair,” said Staton.  “I look forward to working with the majority and minority parties in my new role, seeking to improve the lives of every Georgian and represent their best interests here at the Capitol.  We have a lot of work to do in helping Georgians get back to work by encouraging business growth and expansion, but I am excited about our future and will do all I can in my new leadership position to continue pushing our state towards economic prosperity.”

The caucus vice-chairman works closely with the Majority Caucus Chairman and other party leaders in developing the caucus agenda and assisting in policy development.  Staton would also assume the role of Caucus Chairman anytime the Chair is absent.

Staton is currently serving his third term representing Georgia’s 18th Senate District, first elected to the Georgia Senate in 2004.  During the course of his Senate tenure, Staton has championed landmark election laws such as the voter identification requirement at the polls and proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote.  Staton has also led on important issues such as trauma care funding and implementing new technology policies as chairman of the Senate Science & Technology committee.

Staton and his wife Catherine reside in Macon.  They have two sons Trey and William.
