Statement from Sen. William Ligon on Resolution Opposing Common Core Standards

ATLANTA (June 24, 2013) – Senator William Ligon (R-Brunswick) provides the following statement on the unanimous vote taken by the State Committee of the Georgia Republican Party passing the resolution opposing the “nationalized” Common Core Standards and the aligned PARCC tests. The vote took place during the committee meeting at the Old State Capitol in Milledgeville on Saturday, June 22, 2013.

“This was a huge victory for grassroots conservatives to speak with one unified voice. The members of the State Committee of the Georgia Republican Party should be commended for taking a firm stand against all efforts to nationalize educational standards and testing. Georgia’s citizens want and deserve full control over their educational system. This vote will help pave the way to return to the people their constitutional authority over all educational policy in this state.”

Sen. Ligon authored legislation (SB 167 and SB 203) to withdraw Georgia from the Common Core and the PARCC assessments. The legislation also protects student privacy and establishes a transparent, statewide process for future adoption of all content standards in K-12 education.
