Statement from Sen. Chuck Hufstetler Regarding Hays State Prison

ATLANTA (February 6, 2013) – Sen. Chuck Hufstetler (R-Rome) has released the following statement regarding the events at Hays State Prison:

“Eight days ago I sent out a press release stating that we were actively addressing the issues at Hays State Prison. The replacement of the warden is one of the ways we are addressing the problems.  It is an appropriate step and I look forward to Rick Jacobs being at the facility.   A native of Rome, Rick is a former warden of Hays and my recollection is that the facility was well run under his leadership in the past.  This however, in and of itself, will not necessarily solve the many problems at Hays.  Everyone from the Governor and down is obviously involved in this.  I will meet again with the Department of Corrections on Thursday and we will continue to monitor and address the issues.”

The prison, located in Trion, Ga. was constructed in 1989 and houses 1,508 adult male inmates.  The prison has experienced three violent occurrences in the past three months.
