ATLANTA (Feb. 12, 2009) – Governor Sonny Perdue, Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle and Speaker of the House Glenn Richardson have appointed Sen. George Hooks(D-Americus) to the Regional Water Council. Hooks will work with fellow council members to create an effective water management plan for the region. The plan will focus on both water quantity and water quality issues, and will include forecasts of future water supply and wastewater treatment needs.

“I am extremely honored to be appointed to a position where I can implement effective water management plans for my constituents,” said Hooks. “Water conservation and management have been issues I have promoted in the General Assembly for years.”

The council was formed under the Comprehensive Statewide Water Management Plan, approved by the General Assembly in 2008. The plan also created nine additional regional councils to cover other areas of the state.

“Water will remain a key issue for our state and I am very pleased with the group of individuals selected to move forward with a responsible, long-term plan,” said Lt. Governor Cagle. “This list includes well-rounded men and women who expand across industries and regions. It was an honor to work so closely with Governor Perdue and Speaker Richardson on these nominations and the Comprehensive Statewide Water Management Plan.”

Hooks is currently a member of the Senate Natural Resources and Environment committee, where topics such as environmental resources, development and conservation are addressed. During his tenure in the senate, he has worked to pass legislation to protect Georgia’s natural recourses.

Sen. George Hooks represents the 14th Senate District which include Dooly, Macon, Marion, Peach, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Upson and Webster Counties and portions of Crawford County. He can be reached at his office at 404.656.0065 or by email at george.hooks@senate.ga.gov.
