Senator Chuck Payne Appointed to Two Study Committees

Senator Chuck Payne (R – Dalton) has been appointed by Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan to serve on the Senate Athletic Association Study Committee and the Senate Passenger Vehicle Seat Safety Belt Study Committee.

“I want to thank Lt. Governor Duncan for appointing me to these two study committees,” said Sen. Payne. “Many of us recognize that athletics are a key component of our children’s lives which teach them responsibility so we must ensure that we have proper procedures in place to guarantee everyone can participate in a safe and productive manner. This includes a transparent process on funding, scheduling and anything else dealing with high school athletics. Additionally, it is imperative that we look at current statistics and guidelines for seal belts. We have lost too many lives when passengers aren’t properly restrained so we must review current laws and see where there is room for improvement.”

“Georgians expect their elected leaders to make deliberate, informed decisions to better our state,” said Lt. Governor Duncan. “The study committee process allows our Senators to dedicate extensive focus to a single issue and generate in-depth proposals for our next legislative session. I look forward to the hard work of Senator Payne and the appointed members of both of these study committees as they meet to study, discuss, and prepare legislative action items for the Senate to consider in 2020.”

The Senate Athletic Association Study Committee was created by the passage of Senate Resolution 304 during the 2019 session. The five-member committee will review the current structure for interscholastic athletic events for public high schools and determine if a nonprofit organization should be established as the governing authority to oversee the organization, discipline and scheduling for such events.

The Senate Passenger Vehicle Seat Safety Belt Study Committee was created by the passage of Senate Resolution 366 during the 2019 session. The five-member committee will review ways to increase the usage of seat safety belts with the possibility of requiring every passenger in a vehicle to utilize one.

Both study committees must report their findings on or before December 1, 2019.
