Sen. William Ligon Appointed as Co-Chair of the Coastal Greenway Joint Study Committee

ATLANTA (July 13, 2015)  |  Sen. William Ligon (R – Brunswick) has been selected by Lt .Gov. Casey Cagle to serve as Co-Chair of the Coastal Greenway Joint Study Committee. Sen. Ligon will co-chair the committee with Rep. Ron Stephens (R- Savannah).

“I am pleased to be appointed by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle to serve as the Co-Chair of the Coastal Greenway Joint Study Committee,” said Sen. Ligon. “Over the next few months, my colleagues and I will work together to determine what sort of impacts, both positive and negative, the Coastal Greenway Trail will have on Georgia and decide whether or not the trail should be created.”

“I’m proud to appoint Sen. Ligon to the Coastal Greenway Joint Study Committee and look forward to thoroughly evaluating their findings,” said Lt.Gov. Cagle. “Sen. Ligon has been a leader on this issue, and I’m thankful he’s lending his time and expertise to the important work this committee will perform.”

The Coastal Greenway Joint Study Committee was created by the passage of Senate Resolution 26 during the 2015 legislative session. As stated in the resolution, the committee shall be composed of 13 members; four members of the Senate, four members of the House of Representatives, the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation, the Commissioner of Natural Resources, the Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs, the Director of the Department of Economic Development and the Executive Director of the Coastal Georgia Greenway.

The Coastal Greenway Joint Study Committee will study the effects and feasibility of creating a separate paved trail from Savannah to St. Mary’s. The trail would connect more than 100,000 acres of existing wildlife preserves, natural areas, state parks and 12 national historic landmark districts in Georgia. The committee must report its findings on or before December 1, 2015.
