Sen. Vincent Fort Requests Meeting with Secretary of Army to Discuss Fort McPherson Redevelopment

ATLANTA (August 20, 2014) | Senator Vincent Fort (D — Atlanta) has requested a meeting with the Secretary of Army John McHugh in light of the McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority’s (MILRA) decision to proceed with the sale of 330 acres of the historic military base to Tyler Perry.

“It is my hope that a meeting with Secretary McHugh will produce an informative and meaningful dialogue, something that has been absent from the current redevelopment discussions,” said Sen. Fort. “It is imperative that Secretary McHugh use his authority to halt the back room dealings surrounding the sale of Fort McPherson.  This entire process has been high jacked by those who have no regard for the public’s input.”

Sen. Fort has joined a growing number of local community activists calling for a transparent and open redevelopment process. The MILRA has entered into an agreement to sale a large portion of the land to filmmaker Tyler Perry. The public was left out of these discussions and only made aware of the possible deal after the agreement was in place.

Earlier this month, Sen. Fort sent Secretary McHugh calling on the Army to intervene and block the proposed sale of Fort McPherson.
