ATLANTA (Sept. 24, 2009) – Yesterday the Buford Lanier Women’s Club (BLWC) held a banner hanging ceremony to honor and encourage our troops currently serving in Iraq. The banner was originally created in Buford, has traveled to Iraq, and has returned to Georgia to permanently hang in the Sloppy Floyd Building in Atlanta.
“The Buford Lanier Women’s Club has supported our troops for years. These women have helped raise the morale of our service men and women. I’m honored they invited me to share in this experience. Our troops need all the support from home they can get,” said Sen. Renee Unterman (R-Buford).
About 30 members attended the ceremony in addition to Unterman, including Pete Wheeler, the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Veteran Services and Col. Mark Valeri who presented during the ceremony.
The BLWC has also donated prepaid phone cards, CD’s, DVD’s and portable DVD players in past years. The banner was carried to many areas in Iraq including AL Rustamiyah, Baghdad, Ramadi, Kut, Zako, Qualachulan, Kirkush, Fallujah, Busmiyah, and Taji before making its return to the United States. The BLWC has received many letters of thanks from the troops.
BLWC is a member of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs. BLWC is a charitable organization that participates in many projects that help local, national and International causes.
