Sen. Shafer Commends Zack Leitz for The Backpack Project

ShaferATLANTA (June 28, 2016) | Senate President Pro Tempore David Shafer (R – Duluth) today commended Zack Leitz for his efforts to provide backpacks to the homeless through The Backpack Project. Zack started the nonprofit organization based in Athens, Georgia.

“Zack is a remarkable young man. He exemplifies altruism and what it means to be a pillar of the community. His efforts to combat poverty underscore the truth that individuals, and not bureaucracies, are the most effective and inspiring means of fighting homelessness.  I am proud of him and look forward to watching The Backpack Project grow,” said Sen. Shafer.

The Backpack Project was started by Zack Leitz on April 4, 2015. The nonprofit organization delivers backpacks full of food, clothing, toiletries and other necessities to the homeless in Athens and in Atlanta. The backpacks are hand delivered by volunteers and include no more than 40 items totaling at $20.00. Students of the University of Georgia make up the organization’s volunteer staff.
