Sen. Orrock Honored for Public Service by the Latin American Association

ATLANTA (April 23, 2009) – Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) today received the Latin American Association’s (LAA) award for Outstanding Public Service and Leadership at the organization’s 20th annual Compañeros Awards Luncheon, held at the Georgia Aquarium. Every year, LAA recognizes exceptional community leaders and this year chose to honor those who have made a difference in the lives of Georgia’s Hispanic children, teens and families.

“Georgia’s Hispanic community enriches our state through its dedicated workforce, strong family values and rich historic culture,” said Orrock. “I have been honored to represent these communities in the Georgia General Assembly. Their needs are no less important than others, and I am committed to ensuring that their voices are heard in the legislature.”

Orrock has represented Atlanta neighborhoods for over two decades in the Georgia legislature. She was chosen for LAA’s award for her strong advocacy against anti-immigration legislation. During the 2009 session, she authored a resolution expressing support for immigration reform and fair immigration policies. Orrock noted that the resolution is aimed at making Georgia a place that welcomes international citizens, visitors and businesses. “Recognizing the contribution that immigrant workers and their families make to the growth of our state is crucial when developing comprehensive immigration reform policies. Effective policies must provide sufficient opportunities for immigrants to obtain citizenship and should encourage their civic integration by offering greater education outreach,” she added.

The senator joined a number of distinguished honorees receiving recognition for their service, including an active community leader and an outstanding citizen who used LAA programs to enrich and better her life. Delta Air Lines was also recognized for its ongoing corporate leadership and success of its Latin American Hispanic Employee Network. Additionally, local Spanish-language television station Univision 34 Atlanta was awarded for Media Excellence in its outreach programs and dedication to the Latino community.

LAA’s mission is to help Latino individuals and families achieve their aspirations for academic, social and economic advancement. As the leading service provider for Latin Americans in metro Atlanta, LAA’s goal is to help Latinos achieve self-sufficiency, put down roots, build a better life for themselves and their families, and contribute to strong, thriving communities.
