Sen. Jones will Travel to Kenya for Global Peace Convention

ATLANTA (November 16, 2010) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) will travel to Nairobi, Kenya this week for the 2010 Global Peace Convention, a world-level platform where leaders gather to share ideas on how to build lasting world peace.  He will join social entrepreneurs, interfaith leaders, and prominent government, civic and academic representatives at the Kenyatta International Conference Center from Wednesday, Nov. 17 through Saturday, Nov. 20 to celebrate the Global Peace Festival Foundation’s (GPFF) annual convention.

“It’s thrilling to see an event of this magnitude bring so many different people together who are all working toward the same goal, to bring greater peace to our world,” said Jones.  “I’m honored to have been invited to participate in such an extraordinary event.  While the world is recovering from a severe economic recession, the time is ripe for leaders to pave the way for a new era focused on a culture of service and peace.  The Global Peace Convention can help us put peace-building at the forefront of people’s minds and hearts.”

Jones will host a GPFF summit in Atlanta on December 9 and 10 to look at four critical areas in the community, including economic development/financial literacy, teen pregnancy, school dropouts and youth violence.

The 2010 Convention will highlight recent advances in Kenya, where multi-sector partnerships, with the support of tens of thousands of volunteers, have undertaken a large-scale restoration of the endangered Nairobi River.  The convention will highlight educational and sports programs across the country that are supporting the efforts of Kenya’s many ethnic peoples to create an environment of peace as a model for Africa in the 21st century.

Jones participated in last year’s convention held in Manila, Philippines, where 500 leaders from 28 nations convened to present cutting-edge developments in providing critical-care, building public and private-sector partnerships, and marshalling sustainable responses to underdevelopment.

Since 2007, the GPFF has grown into a worldwide movement engaging political and spiritual leaders, sports stars, celebrities, and a broad range of partnering organizations.  This year’s convention will provide an international platform to highlight innovative, soft-power responses to conflict in the 21st century.

Sen. Emanuel Jones represents the 10th Senate District, which includes portions of DeKalb and Henry counties.  He may be reached at 404.656.0502 or via e-mail at emanuel.jones@senate.ga.gov.
