Sen. Gloria Butler Appointed to Chair Senate Study Committee on Surgical Smoke Evacuation Systems

ATLANTA (August 10, 2020) | Sen. Gloria Butler (D – Stone Mountain) was appointed today by Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan to serve as the Chairwoman of the Senate Study Committee on Surgical Smoke Evacuation Systems.

“Now, more than ever, we need to prioritize the needs and well-being of our healthcare systems, workers and their patients,” said Sen. Butler. “By recognizing the causal relationship between surgical smoke and various health complications, as well as by listening to the vast insight of affected parties, my hope is that we will be able to find innovative and cost efficient ways to help better protect the people of this state. I look forward to working with my fellow committee members during the next couple of months and I am confident we will be able to make great strides on this issue.”

“Senator Butler has been a dedicated member of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee for a number of legislative sessions and will diligently examine the potential harmful effects of surgical smoke on our state’s healthcare workers in the operating room,” said Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan.

The other Senate members appointed to serve on the committee are as follows:

Sen. Chuck Hufstetler (R – Rome)

Sen. Marty Harbin (R – Tyrone)
