Sen. Fort Leads Passage of Public Transit Bill through Urban Affairs Committee

ATLANTA (February 22, 2013) –Senator Vincent Fort (D- Atlanta) today led the passage of Senate Bill 92 out of the Senate Urban Affairs Committee.  The legislation would permit a car rental tax to be used for public transit, constructions and improvements.

“This bill is essential to giving local governments the ability to fund their own public transit projects and make repairs that are so badly needed,” said Sen. Fort.  “Car rental taxes are regularly used to fund public transit in many cities throughout the country.”

With the failure of last year’s TSPOLST referendum, it is important to find alternative ways to fund public transit repairs.  If passed, counties and municipalities levying such a tax must state where the tax proceeds are going each fiscal year. If the tax proceeds are used for capital outlay projects, then information must be include on the capital outlay projects as well. Under this bill, capital outlay projects consist of the construction and improvement of certain projects including public transit.

SB 92 will now continue on to the Senate Rules Committee to be considered for a full vote on the Senate Floor.
