Sen. Fort Applauds Stevie Wonder’s Boycott of Florida

ATLANTA (July 17, 2013) – Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta) has issued the following statement:

“I applaud Mr. Wonder for having the courage and integrity to boycott performing in Florida in light of the Trayvon Martin case and subsequent verdict of not guilty for George Zimmerman.  Mr. Wonder has additionally called for a boycott of Georgia and any other state using the unacceptable ‘Stand Your Ground’ law,” said Sen. Fort.

It is my hope that other entertainers follow Mr. Wonder’s lead by boycotting all states that have enacted this egregious law.  We have seen the power of protest before, when artists and entertainers came together to boycott Arizona after the state failed to acknowledge Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  I’m confident we can be the voice of change by uniting those who reject the ‘Stand Your Ground’ law throughout these United States.

I have drafted legislation that will be introduced in the 2014 Legislative Session to repeal Georgia’s ‘Stand Your Ground Law’.”
