Sen. Douglas Re-Appointed Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Chairman

ATLANTA (January 9, 2009) – State Sen. John Douglas (R-Social Circle) was re-appointed Senate Veterans, Military and Homeland Security Committee Chairman for the 2009-10 sessions of the Georgia General Assembly by Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. The committee exists to maintain Senate oversight for veterans’ services, National Guard activities and homeland security efforts in Georgia.

In addition to retaining his chairmanship, Senator Douglas will remain a member of the Transportation and Public Safety Committees. New assignments this year include becoming a member of the important Appropriations Committee which is responsible for writing the state budget and distributing funds to numerous government agencies, departments and organizations annually. Additionally he will serve as Secretary of the Higher Education Committee with oversight of Georgia’s colleges and universities. Finally, Senator Douglas will also serve as a member of the Ethics Committee

“I am delighted to become a part of several new committees, especially the Appropriations Committee with the budget being of upmost importance this year,” said Sen. Douglas. “Each of these committees has a direct impact on the counties of the 17th Senate district and I am honored to represent the district when important decisions are being20made that impact us all. While I will miss serving on the Education Committee, the Senators working there will continue the work of providing the best possible education foundation for Georgia’s students.”

Sen. Douglas has been a member of the Senate since 2005 after serving two years in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2003-04. He also served on the Newton County Board of Education from 1998-2002. Prior to public office, Sen. Douglas served in the U.S. Army from 1977-1994.
