Sen. Brian Strickland Appointed Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Higher Education

ATLANTA (January 18, 2019) | Sen. Brian Strickland (R – McDonough) was recently appointed to serve as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Higher Education and to serve on several influential committees for the 2019 Legislative Session by the Senate Committee on Assignments.

“It is a true honor to be selected to serve as the Vice Chairman of such an impactful committee,” said Sen. Strickland. “As the home to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country, Georgia is consistently ranked as one of the best states in the country for higher education. I look forward to working with members of this committee to pass meaningful legislation that will continue the growth and success of institutions of higher education in Georgia.”

In addition to serving as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Higher Education, Sen. Strickland will serve on the Appropriations Committee, the Banking and Financial Institutions Committee, the Ethics Committee and the Judiciary Committee. Sen. Strickland was also selected by Gov. Brian Kemp to serve as a Governor’s Administration Floor Leader.

“The Senate Committee on Assignments put great thought into our Chair – and Vice Chair – assignments,” said Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan. “Vice Chairs hold an important position in the committee leadership structure and we have assembled an incredibly prepared group of leaders – including Sen. Strickland – who are ready to get to work for our state.”

Once a piece of legislation is introduced in the Senate, it is assigned to a committee, depending on its topic.  If the committee gives the legislation a “do pass” recommendation, then the proposed law is sent to the Rules Committee for consideration. The appointed chairs will oversee the operation and order of Senate committee meetings, including calling for action on bills, resolutions or other matters assigned to that committee.

The first session of the 155th Georgia General Assembly convened on January 14, 2019, at the Georgia State Capitol.
