I-75 dedicationATLANTA (August 31, 2016) | Senator Larry Walker III (R – Perry) co-hosted the official dedication of the Governor Sonny Perdue Highway on August 30, 2016. The event was attended by Guest of Honor, the Honorable Sonny Perdue and several leaders in the legislature, state and local community. During the event, Senate Appropriations Chairman Jack Hill (R – Reidsville) and United States Senator David Perdue (R – GA) expressed appreciation for Governor Perdue’s years of service to Georgia and for his family’s steadfast support.

“It is an honor to be a part of this historic event,” said Sen. Walker. “Governor Perdue is a strong leader and his personal commitment to the wellbeing of Georgia and its citizens is remarkable. This highway dedication recognizes the positive impact he left on this great state and our local communities.”

Senate Resolution 892, authored by Sen. Walker, passed during the 2016 legislative session. It dedicates the portion of I-75 running through Houston County as the Governor Sonny Perdue Highway. Perdue served as Georgia’s 81st Governor. When he was sworn in on January 13, 2003, it marked the first time a Republican would serve as Governor of Georgia since the Reconstruction Era. He graduated from Warner Robins High School and earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Georgia. Prior to being elected to the Georgia Senate in 1990, he served as a Captain in the United States Air Force and was a successful businessman. While serving in the Georgia Senate, he was elected by his colleagues as President Pro Tempore. He had this role until he was elected as Governor in 2002. During his two terms as Governor, he cut state spending and reduced the size of state government to balance the budget. He also improved high school graduation rates and SAT scores.
