Sen. Smith Reappointed Judiciary Chair and Other Notable Committees

ATLANTA – (January 13, 2009) State Senator Preston Smith (R-Rome) has been reappointed by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle to chair the Senate Judiciary Committee, a position he has held since 2005. The Lt. Governor also granted Sen. Smith’s request to serve on the powerful Rules Committee for the 2009-2010 legislative term. The Rules Committee is responsible for determining which bills will be scheduled for a vote by the full Senate.

Sen. Mullis Files Resolution Urging Removal of ACORN’s Tax Exemption Status

ATLANTA (January 13, 2009) – State Sen. Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga) has filed legislation urging the IRS to no longer allow the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) to keep its tax exempt status, after numerous reports that the organization falsified voter records.

Sen. Jackson Newly Appointed to Senate Appropriations Committee

ATLANTA (January 12, 2009) — Senator Bill Jackson (R-Appling) has recently been appointed to the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee by Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. The Appropriations Committee is responsible for writing the state budget and distributing funds to numerous government agencies, departments and organizations annually.
