New Income Tax Reduction Legislation Introduced by Georgia General Assembly

ATLANTA (February 21, 2018)  |  Sen. Ben Watson (R – Savannah) is pleased to support a new series of legislation along with Governor Nathan Deal, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, Speaker of the House David Ralston, representatives and senators that will cut state income tax rates. The newly proposed tax cut legislation is the first major income tax cut in Georgia history.

“It is so important that we are seeing our state government take these steps forward,” said Sen. Watson. “Besides money staying in citizens’ pockets, this legislation will allow us to be proactive in light of the federal government’s tax code changes. As the general assembly moves forward with these pieces of legislation, we will keep our citizens’ best interests at the forefront to ensure that this true middle class tax cut passes both the Senate and House and receives the Governor’s signature.”

Under House Bill 821 and Senate Bill 918, the state of Georgia would be saving taxpayers more than $5 billion over the next five years. Families of four could see a 15 percent decrease in the amount owed in state income taxes. In addition, the legislation outlines that the standard deduction for all filers would be doubled.
