Homestead Tax Exemption Bill Passes Senate and House Floors

ATLANTA (April 3, 2018)  |    Senate Bill 485, sponsored by Sen. Jen Jordan (D – Atlanta), passed the Senate and House Floors on Thursday, March 29. SB 485 would increase the homestead exemption from City of Atlanta Independent School District ad valorem taxes to $50,000 of the assessed value of a homestead exceeding $10,000.

“Residents of Fulton County experienced sticker shock when they got their property tax bills last year, and this legislation is going to help,” said Sen. Jordan. “If the voters approve, Atlantans will see real relief as homeowners get their first increase in many years to the general homestead exemption. I’m happy to deliver on my promise to help, but I’m not done. I want to come back next year to fix this problem – this is only the first step.”

The Senate agreed to the committee substitute offered by the House and the bill will now be sent to the governor for final approval.
