Georgia Senate Passes Bill Urging Congress to Draft Fiscally Responsible Amendments to U.S. Constitution

ATLANTA (February 26, 2014)  |  The Georgia State Senate will urge the U.S. Congress to draft a Constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget and federal spending limit with the passage of Senate Resolution 70 today. The legislation passed by a vote of 36 to 13 and was sponsored by Sen. Judson Hill (R – Marietta).

“Our nation has become its own worst enemy by printing money to pay ourselves, and in the process, we are continually devaluing the U.S. dollar. No group other than the states can pressure the federal government to start spending within its means. I am proud of the Georgia Senate for taking steps to end this cycle of perpetual debt and telling the federal government that enough is enough,” said Sen. Hill.

Georgia joins several other states that have introduced similar legislation to encourage Congressional action on a balanced budget amendment. In 1995, a widely-supported Congressional balanced budget amendment failed by one vote. In addition, a similar bill also sponsored by Sen. Hill passed the Georgia State Senate, but failed to receive a vote in the House of Representatives in 2012.

SR 70 now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
