Georgia Senate Expands the Use of SPLOST Proceeds

ATLANTA (March 16, 2015) | Senate Bill 122, sponsored by Sen. Jeff Mullis (R – Chickamauga), will allow Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds to be used for the repair of capital outlay projects.

“When communities are hit unexpectedly by natural disasters, sometimes the cost of the repairs can be a large obstacle to overcome. By allowing for SPLOST funds to cover those kinds of repairs, we are giving people the opportunity to help speed along the recovery after disasters hit,” said Sen. Mullis.

Projects set forth by SB 122 will include the repair of city buildings, along with roads, streets and bridges in the taxing district that have been damaged or destroyed by natural disasters. Counties governing authorities will have the option to use or opt out of using these funds for the specified reasons outlined by this legislation.

SB 122 passed unanimously and will move on to the House of Representatives for consideration
