Darien Bridge to Remain Open During Construction

ATLANTA (August 10, 2018) | Sen. William Ligon (R – Waverly), in discussions with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Commissioner Russell McMurry on Friday, obtained GDOT agreement that the Darien bridge would remain open during construction, however, only one lane will be available for traffic flow serving both directions. The traffic light will also continue in operation.

Sen. Ligon expressed his appreciation to Commissioner McMurry and also thanked Secretary of State, Brian Kemp, for his assistance with resolving the situation.

“It would have been devastating for Darien and its surrounding community for the main bridge on Highway 17 to be completely closed to traffic,” stated Sen. Ligon. “While we must keep safety concerns uppermost in mind, I am pleased that the GDOT has been able to find a solution to accommodate traffic without sacrificing safety. I trust that McIntosh residents will be patient with the construction phase and be mindful of safety conditions when crossing the bridge.”
