Sen. Reed’s Bill to Combat HIV Passes Committee

ATLANTA (March 5, 2009) – State Sen. Kasim Reed’s (D-Atlanta) bill that provides for the mandatory HIV testing of inmates passed through the Senate Committee on State Institutions and Property earlier this week. This legislation requires any person in custody of a penal institution for one year or longer and who has not previously tested positive for HIV be tested for HIV 60 days prior to their release.

Sen. Kasim Reed Files Legislation to Fund More Police Officers and Firefighters in Atlanta

ATLANTA (January 29, 2009) – State Sen. Kasim Reed (D-Atlanta) is proposing an initiative to fund public safety and help fight crime in the City of Atlanta. A referendum, giving the citizens of Atlanta a choice to levy a 1 mill property tax dedicated solely to funding police and fire officer salaries was announced today. Senators Nan Orrok (D-Atlanta), Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta), and Horacena Tate (D-Atlanta) are co-sponsors of the legislation.
