Lawmakers include Critical Funding for Georgia Southwestern in State Budget

ATLANTA (April 21, 2010) – South Georgia lawmakers Sen. George Hooks (D-Americus) and Rep. Mike Cheokas (D-Americus) have included a critical $6.5 million in the state budget for Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) to build a new health and human sciences building.

Senate passes Hooks’ bill to recover Dormant Trust Accounts

ATLANTA (March 24, 2010) – The Georgia State Senate today overwhelmingly passed legislation authored by Sen. George Hooks (D-Americus) to recover dormant trust accounts.  Senate Bill 302 establishes state law to ensure trust accounts are used for their original purpose.  Hooks is the Dean of the Senate, and one of the chamber’s most influential members.

Georgia State Capitol Celebrates 100 Years of Scouting Boy Scouts and Georgia State Parks Announce Partnership

ATLANTA (Feb. 11, 2010) – State lawmakers today welcomed Boy Scout troops from across Georgia to celebrate 100 years of scouting during Boy Scouts of America Day at the Georgia State Capitol.  Representatives of the Department of Natural Resources were also on hand to announce the “Scouting for State Parks” initiative that will engage thousands of scouts and volunteers to help maintain Georgia’s state parks.

Sen. Hooks to Continue Longtime Service with OneGeorgia Authority

ATLANTA (Oct. 29, 2009) – Sen. George Hooks (D-Americus) this week was reappointed to the OneGeorgia Authority Overview Committee by Lt. Governor Casey Cagle.  Hooks is the only member to serve on the committee since its inception nine years ago, which was established to financially assist the state’s most economically challenged areas.
