On the Clock: Americans Work More Every Year to Balance Government Spending

Sen. Chip Pearson

By Chip Pearson
DAWSONVILLE (August 27, 2010) – When our country’s financial deficit reaches into the trillions, it’s hard to put such excessive government spending into perspective.  Here’s one way to look at it: in order to cover your share of the government’s spending, you would have to work an average of 231 days out of the year.  That day fell on August 19 this year, which the Americans for Tax Reform Foundation calls Cost of Government Day (COGD).  This represents how long it takes the average American worker to earn enough income to cover their share of the spending and regulatory burdens imposed by government at the federal, state and local levels.*

A Government Takeover Disguised as Financial Regulatory Reform

Sen. Chip Pearson

By Chip Pearson
ATLANTA (August 13, 2010) – Washington has released its latest assault on American liberty with the president’s recent signature of the massive financial overhaul bill.  Publicized by the White House and political left as a way to prevent another financial crisis, the bill is merely a vehicle for a government takeover of our financial sector.  The rules and regulations contained in the bill’s more than 2,300 pages impose new bureaucratic red tape throughout the financial and banking industries.  The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has coined the term “regulatory tsunami” to describe the burdens it will put on U.S. businesses.  Chamber CEO Tom Donohue has said that the bill creates “over 350 required regulatory rulemakings, 47 studies and 74 reports.”

American Taxpayers under Siege

Sen. Chip Pearson

By Chip Pearson
ATLANTA (June 18, 2010) – While the steady stream of illegal immigrants continues to flood American streets, our country’s leaders do nothing more than offer a political nod to securing our borders.  President Obama is sending 1,200 troops to Mexico, just enough to plug a tiny fissure in the gaping chasm that is our border security.  Honest, hardworking American taxpayers are footing the bill for the more than 10 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S. today.  Taxpayers are under siege; they simply cannot sustain the financial burden of millions of undocumented immigrants who cross our borders each year.
