Cancer Insurance Coverage for Firefighters Becomes Law

ATLANTA (May 8, 2017) | Last week, Governor Nathan Deal signed House Bill 146 into Georgia law. Sen. John Albers (R – Roswell) carried House Bill 146 in the Senate, and has been a long-time advocate for laws that positively affect the lives of those who put their life on the line for Georgians.

“I want to extend my gratitude to Governor Deal, members of the Georgia General Assembly and everyone outside the Capitol who came together to get this important legislation passed and signed into law,” said Sen. Albers. “I would like to thank Lt. Governor Cagle for his continued leadership and assistance with getting HB 146 passed. This legislation is much better than the proposal from last year and will be even more beneficial for Georgia’s firefighters. By providing firefighters with critical insurance coverage, we stand by our promise to support them and their efforts.”

Under HB 146, fire departments will provide expanded insurance coverage for firefighters who are diagnosed with certain cancers. This legislation requires every fire department to insure each firefighter for cancer diagnosed after having served 12 consecutive months with the department. This legislation goes into effect on January 1, 2018.
