A Time to Give Thanks

By State Sen. Greg Goggans

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches it brings with it a wonderful time for us all to reflect on what is truly important and meaningful in life.  On this very significant day, with origins tracing back to our country’s earliest history, we have the privilege of gathering with family and friends and celebrating the things that no economic downturn or recession can take away from us: the true riches of love, friendship, faith, and pride in being an American and a Georgian.

We must also take time to celebrate and give thanks to the freedoms we come to enjoy each and every day.  That freedom was not free, and continues to be paid for by the sacrifices of our brave men and women serving our nation in the armed forces.  They, and the countless number of military officers before them, have served and given their lives so America can continue to be the constant symbol of hope and freedom in an ever-changing world.  We must constantly be thankful for their service to our nation.

Many families will not have a chance to see their loved ones gathered around the table or watching football because they are overseas keeping us safe and ensuring our way of life continues.  Those military families need our thanks as well, as they provide daily love and support to those in the line of duty.

Amid all the economic uncertainty and frustration these last several years have brought, never forget the true riches of life: the loved ones who make Thanksgiving truly special.  Take a moment to be thankful for your loved ones, the people who have been placed in your lives and make a lasting impact each and every day.  These wonderful blessings are things we can all be thankful for this year, and every year.

Again, I wish you and your family a safe and joyous Thanksgiving holiday.  Please remember to contact me in my office on the issues that are affecting you and your area.  I am here to represent you and it is an honor for me to work on your behalf.  As always, I’d like to thank members of the Senate staff, who contribute regularly to my column.

Sen. Greg Goggans represents the 7th Senate District, which includes Atkinson, Bacon, Berrien, Clinch, Coffee, Echols, Lanier, Pierce and Ware counties and a portion of Cook County.
