Sen. Ed Harbison Salutes Life of Georgia Veteran and Friend

ATLANTA (April 22 , 2015)  |  Georgia Veterans Affairs Commissioner and World War II Veteran, Pete Wheeler, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92. Wheeler had been commissioner of the department since 1952 and was the state’s longest-serving agency head. (more…)

Opportunity School Districts Bill Signed into Law

ATLANTA (April 22, 2015)  |  Sen. Butch Miller (R- Gainesville) joined Gov. Nathan Deal yesterday  as he signed SB 133 into law.  This measure, also known as Opportunity School Districts, will allow the state to help improve schools that continually struggle to meet educational goals and standards.  SR287, the companion resolution approved by the General Assembly last month, will be posed to voters as constitutional amendment in the next general election. This legislative package is part of Gov. Nathan Deal’s comprehensive plan to boost student achievement and create more educational opportunities for Georgia students. (more…)

Sen. Rick Jeffares, Rep. Dave Belton Announce Increase Funding for Newton County FFA/FCCLA Center

ATLANTA (April 20, 2015) | Sen.Rick Jeffares (R-McDonough) and Rep. Dave Belton (R-Buckhead) today announced that the fiscal year 2016 state budget will include $9.5 million in additional grant funds to construct new buildings for the Georgia FFA/FCCLA Center in Newton County. The Senate gave final approval to the fiscal year 2016 budget, or HB 76, on Tuesday, March 31, 2015. (more…)

Sen. Renee Unterman Honored for Advocacy Work During National Crime Victim Rights Week

ATLANTA (April 20, 2015)  |  Sen. Renee Unterman (R – Buford) was honored by the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council for her work as an advocate and supporter of victim’s rights in the Georgia General Assembly. The Council presented Sen. Unterman with the Angel Award at their 6th annual ceremony held on April 14, 2015, in Forsyth, Georgia, during National Crime Victim Rights Week. (more…)

Senate Bill 129 Gets Support from 11 of Georgia’s Congressional District Republican Party Conventions

ATLANTA (April 20, 2015)  |  Over the weekend, 11 of Georgia’s Congressional District Republican Party Conventions passed a resolution urging the Georgia General Assembly to pass Senate Bill 129 as it passed the Senate. These resolutions specifically referenced support for SB 129, which is narrowly drawn to reflect the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act language as it passed into law in 1993. (more…)
