ATLANTA (February 12, 2015) | Two companion bills that intend to stop the sexual exploitation of minors and provide rehabilitative services to victims of sex trafficking passed the Georgia State Senate today. Senate Bill 8 extends the statute of limitations in order to bring more severe punishments to those capitalizing on the innocence of a child and establishes a fund for victims. Senate Resolution 7 provides a funding mechanism for the Commission established in SB 8 by increasing the penalties for several sexual abuse and sex trafficking crimes. Sen. Renee Unterman (R – Buford), a long-time advocate against trafficking crimes, is the sponsor of both Senate Bill 8 and Senate Resolution 7.
Georgia State Retirees Association Names Sen. Josh McKoon Senate Legislator of the Year
ATLANTA (February 12, 2015) | Georgia State Retirees Association named Sen. Josh McKoon (R-Columbus) as the Senate Legislator of the Year. The award was presented to Sen. McKoon at the joint GSRA-GPHSA Legislative Reception on February 4, 2015. The award is presented annually to the state Senate member who has exhibited the most support of state active and retired employees and educators in the past year.

Last week, the Georgia State Senate convened for Days 9, 10, and 11 of the 2015 legislative session. Capitol business is quickly starting to pick-up as lawmakers continue to file legislation and resume the committee process. I am proud to say the Senate unanimously passed its second bill in a row showing a strong bipartisan commitment to Georgia’s children.
